AnswerLive data

Can Claude tell me how much a stamp costs?

Yes with web search, with one caution. USPS changes prices once or twice a year, so from training data alone Claude may give an older stamp price. With web search on, Claude can look it up, but articles about past price changes rank well and are easy to repeat. Connect the free Postage Stamp Price server and Claude reads USPS Notice 123, the official retail price list, when you ask, with its effective date. It gives the Forever stamp price, the extra ounce, postcards, large envelopes, the surcharge for square cards and the Global Forever price, works out postage for a stack of holiday cards and lists flat rate prices.

With the Postage Stamp Price server

  • The Forever stamp price from the USPS price list in force today, with its effective date.

  • The total for a stack of cards and how many Forever stamps each one needs.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-05. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

How much is a stamp right now?

Tool call

get_stamp_price {}

Server answer

A Forever stamp (First-Class Mail, 1 oz letter) costs $0.82 under the USPS price list effective October 4, 2026. Each extra ounce adds $0.29 (2 oz $1.11, 3 oz $1.40, 3.5 oz $1.69). A postcard stamp is $0.65, a 1 oz large envelope $1.69, and an international 1 oz letter or Global Forever stamp $1.75. Square or rigid letters add a $0.49 nonmachinable surcharge.

Run on 2026-11-05. The server reads Notice 123 each time you ask, so a new USPS price shows up with its new effective date.

You ask

What postage do 40 square holiday cards weighing 1.2 oz each need?

Tool call

calculate_letter_postage {"weight_oz":1.2,"nonmachinable":true,"quantity":40}

Server answer

A 1.2 oz First-Class Mail stamped letter in the US costs $1.60 ($1.11 plus the $0.49 nonmachinable surcharge), so 40 of them cost $64.00. With Forever stamps only ($0.82 each) that is 2 stamps per piece, overpaying $0.04. Prices effective October 4, 2026.

Questions

Is a Forever stamp still good after a price increase?
Yes. A Forever stamp is always worth the current 1 oz First-Class Mail letter price, whatever you paid for it.
Why do square cards cost more?
Square, rigid or lumpy letters cannot go through the sorting machines, so USPS adds a nonmachinable surcharge to each one.
Is the server free?
Yes. The Postage Stamp Price server is free at its hosted URL with no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
