Can Claude calculate volumetric weight?

Yes. Volumetric weight, also called dimensional weight, is length times width times height divided by the carrier's divisor. Claude can do that math, or run it in its sandbox with code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max). The risk is in the inputs, such as a carton left out or a weight guessed. Connect the Packing List server (free token) and Claude works from the cartons and packed items you recorded, and returns tare, net, gross, volumetric and chargeable weight per carton and for the shipment. A carton with no dimensions makes the chargeable total null instead of a guess.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Does the length times width times height arithmetic.
  • Explains why carriers bill the greater of gross and volumetric weight.

With the Packing List server

  • Chargeable weight from the cartons actually packed.
  • The same shipment at another divisor in one call.
  • No guessed total when a carton has no dimensions.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-05. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

What is the chargeable weight for this shipment?

Tool call

carton_report {"packing_list":"PL-2026-0001"}

Server answer

{"divisor": 5000, "cartons": [{"id": "C01", "dimensions_cm": {"length": 60, "width": 40, "height": 40}, "gross_kg": "5.650 kg", "volumetric_grams": 19200, "chargeable_kg": "19.200 kg", "chargeable_basis": "volumetric"}, {"id": "C02", "dimensions_cm": {"length": 40, "width": 30, "height": 20}, "gross_kg": "1.900 kg", "volumetric_grams": 4800, "chargeable_kg": "4.800 kg", "chargeable_basis": "volumetric"}], "totals": {"gross_kg": "7.550 kg", "chargeable_kg": "24.000 kg"}}

These are the two cartons from the packing slip example. The default divisor is 5000 for centimetres and kilograms, so the 60 by 40 by 40 cm carton weighs 19.2 kg by volume. The server answers in JSON. This is a shortened copy, and every field shown is unchanged.

You ask

And at a divisor of 6000?

Tool call

carton_report {"packing_list":"PL-2026-0001","divisor":6000}

Server answer

{"divisor": 6000, "cartons": [{"id": "C01", "dimensions_cm": {"length": 60, "width": 40, "height": 40}, "gross_kg": "5.650 kg", "volumetric_grams": 16000, "chargeable_kg": "16.000 kg", "chargeable_basis": "volumetric"}, {"id": "C02", "dimensions_cm": {"length": 40, "width": 30, "height": 20}, "gross_kg": "1.900 kg", "volumetric_grams": 4000, "chargeable_kg": "4.000 kg", "chargeable_basis": "volumetric"}], "totals": {"gross_kg": "7.550 kg", "chargeable_kg": "20.000 kg"}}

Carriers publish their own divisor, so use the one in your contract.

Questions

Which divisor should I use?
The one your carrier publishes. Pass it as divisor on the call. The default is 5000.
What is free, and what does Pro add?
The carton report is free, with up to 3 packing lists open at once. Pro is $19 once for the Packing List server, or $39 once for all 49 servers. It also returns the packing slip as a .txt download file.
Is the server free?
The hosted Packing List server has a free tier. A free token lasts 30 days and allows 600 calls an hour, with no account. Some features are Pro, and the server page lists what is free and what is not.
