Can Claude do bookkeeping?

Partly. Claude can sort transactions into categories, explain debits and credits and draft journal entries. With code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max) it can build a ledger in a spreadsheet from files you upload, and Projects and memory can keep your chart of accounts. What a chat does not keep is a set of books that adds up from your saved invoices, payments and expenses. Connect the Cash Book server (free token) and Claude derives a balanced double-entry ledger for a period from the records saved in the sibling servers, with every line traced to its source document.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Sorts transactions into categories and explains debits and credits.
  • Builds a ledger in a spreadsheet from uploaded files when code execution is on.

With the Cash Book server

  • A ledger rebuilt from saved invoices, payments, deposits and expenses.
  • Every line traced to the document and server it came from.
  • A trial balance proved to the cent, free with no monthly cap.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-05. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

Build the November books from my invoices and expenses.

Tool call

ledger_build {"from":"2026-11-01","to":"2026-11-30","currency":"USD"}

Server answer

{"period": {"from": "2026-11-01", "to": "2026-11-30"}, "lines": 8, "debits": "USD 3708.29", "credits": "USD 3708.29", "balanced": true, "accounts": [{"account": "cash", "account_name": "Cash", "lines": 3, "balance": "USD 1091.71", "balance_minor": 109171}, {"account": "expenses:software", "account_name": "Expenses: software", "lines": 1, "balance": "USD 59.99", "balance_minor": 5999}, {"account": "expenses:travel", "account_name": "Expenses: travel", "lines": 1, "balance": "USD 48.30", "balance_minor": 4830}, {"account": "receivables", "account_name": "Receivables", "lines": 2, "balance": "USD 1200.00", "balance_minor": 120000}, {"account": "revenue", "account_name": "Revenue", "lines": 1, "balance": "USD -2400.00", "balance_minor": -240000}]}

One USD 2,400.00 invoice with USD 1,200.00 paid, and two expenses, were saved in the Invoice and Expense Tracker servers under the same token first. The server answers in JSON. This is a shortened copy, and every field shown is unchanged.

You ask

Show me the ledger lines behind invoice INV-2026-0001.

Tool call

ledger_lines {"from":"2026-11-01","to":"2026-11-30","currency":"USD","source_id":"INV-2026-0001"}

Server answer

{"debits": "USD 3600.00", "credits": "USD 3600.00", "lines": [{"date": "2026-11-05", "account": "receivables", "debit": "USD 2400.00", "credit": "USD 0.00", "description": "Invoice INV-2026-0001 to Harbor Dental"}, {"date": "2026-11-05", "account": "revenue", "debit": "USD 0.00", "credit": "USD 2400.00", "description": "Invoice INV-2026-0001 net"}, {"date": "2026-11-05", "account": "cash", "debit": "USD 1200.00", "credit": "USD 0.00", "description": "Payment received on INV-2026-0001 by bank transfer (HD-1105)"}, {"date": "2026-11-05", "account": "receivables", "debit": "USD 0.00", "credit": "USD 1200.00", "description": "INV-2026-0001 paid"}]}

Each line is shown with five of its fields, unchanged. The invoice posts to receivables and revenue, and the part payment moves USD 1,200.00 from receivables to cash.

Questions

Can Claude do bookkeeping?
Partly. Claude can sort transactions into categories, explain debits and credits and draft journal entries. With code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max) it can build a ledger in a spreadsheet from files you upload, and Projects and memory can keep your chart of accounts. What a chat does not keep is a set of books that adds up from your saved invoices, payments and expenses. Connect the Cash Book server (free token) and Claude derives a balanced double-entry ledger for a period from the records saved in the sibling servers, with every line traced to its source document.
Does it post my bank statement too?
No. Cash is posted from your invoice payments and expenses, and an imported bank statement is used only as evidence for the bank reconciliation. Posting both would count the same money twice.
Does it connect to QuickBooks or Xero?
No. It reads only the records saved in the sibling servers under your token, and it writes nothing back to them.
What is free, and what does Pro add?
Building a ledger is free for 3 periods a month, and the trial balance and ledger lines are free with no monthly cap. Pro is $19 once for the Cash Book server, or $39 once for all 49 servers. It adds the month close with a stored snapshot, the account by account ledger report and the CSV export of ledger lines.
Is the server free?
The hosted Cash Book server has a free tier. A free token lasts 30 days and allows 600 calls an hour, with no account. Some features are Pro, and the server page lists what is free and what is not.
