Can Claude tell me the current I bond rate?

Yes with web search, and a tool makes it exact for your own bond. The rate changes every May 1 and November 1, so from memory alone Claude may quote an old period. With web search on, Claude can find the new rate of 5.51 percent for November 2026 to April 2027, but the rate an older bond earns depends on its own fixed rate and the month it was bought, and news pages rarely show that. Connect the free I Bond Rate server and Claude reads the TreasuryDirect rate, works out the rate your bond earns now from its issue month, and estimates its value with the 3-month penalty. It gives rates and math, not investment advice. TreasuryDirect is the official place to check and buy.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Explains the composite rate formula, fixed rate and inflation rate.
  • Finds the newly announced rate on a web page when web search is on.

With the I Bond Rate server

  • The current composite, fixed and inflation rate from TreasuryDirect, with the issue months it covers.
  • The rate an I bond you own earns now, from its issue month.
  • An estimate of its value before and after the 3-month penalty.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-05. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

What is the I bond rate for November 2026?

Tool call

get_current_i_bond_rate {}

Server answer

I bonds bought from November 2026 through April 2027 earn 5.51% a year for their first 6 months: a 1.40% fixed rate that lasts for the life of the bond plus 2.04% semiannual inflation rate. Treasury sets the next rates on May 1, 2027. Limit $10,000 in electronic I bonds per Social Security number per calendar year, $25 minimum, held at least 12 months, last 3 months of interest lost if cashed before 5 years.

The hosted server got no answer from TreasuryDirect within 4 seconds on this run, so it answered from its built-in copy of the TreasuryDirect rate chart effective November 1, 2026, and its rate_source field says so.

You ask

What rate is my I bond from April 2022 earning now?

Tool call

get_i_bond_rate_for_issue_date {"issue_month":"2022-04"}

Server answer

An I bond issued in April 2022 has a fixed rate of 0.00%. For October 2026 through March 2027 it earns 3.34% a year (semiannual inflation 1.67% from the May 2026 announcement). Its rate changes every April and October.

Should I buy I bonds now?
The server does not say. It gives the official rates and the math for your bond. Compare them with your own plans, and check TreasuryDirect before you buy.
Why does my old bond earn less than 5.51 percent?
Each bond keeps the fixed rate from the month it was bought, and its inflation rate changes every 6 months from its issue month. A bond with a 0 percent fixed rate earns only the inflation part.
Is the server free?
Yes. The I Bond Rate server is free at its hosted URL with no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
