Can Claude read bank statements?

Yes. Claude reads a bank statement you upload as a PDF or CSV and answers questions about it, and with code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max) it can total and chart the rows in its sandbox. Projects can keep the files. What a chat does not keep is one ledger that grows month by month with repeated rows skipped. Connect the Bank Statement server (free token) and Claude imports each CSV export into a saved ledger per account, totals money in and out by category, month or counterparty, and searches every stored line.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Reads an uploaded PDF or CSV statement and answers questions about it.
  • Totals and charts the rows in its sandbox when code execution is on.

With the Bank Statement server

  • One saved ledger per account that later months add to.
  • Rows already imported skipped on the next import.
  • Totals by category, month or counterparty across months.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-05. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

Where did the money in my checking account go in October?

Tool call

statement_summary {"from":"2026-10-01","to":"2026-10-31","group_by":"counterparty"}

Server answer

{"from": "2026-10-01", "to": "2026-10-31", "group_by": "counterparty", "count": 10, "by_currency": {"USD": {"count": 10, "money_in": "USD 2500.00", "money_out": "USD 397.63", "net": "USD 2102.37", "groups": [{"group": "OPENING DEPOSIT TRANSFER FROM SAVINGS", "count": 1, "net": "USD 2000.00"}, {"group": "CLIENT PAYMENT BAYLINE LOGISTICS BL-7731", "count": 1, "net": "USD 500.00"}, {"group": "SHELL OIL 5544", "count": 2, "net": "USD -100.05"}, {"group": "COMCAST BUSINESS", "count": 1, "net": "USD -89.99"}, {"group": "XCEL ENERGY", "count": 1, "net": "USD -84.12"}, {"group": "ADOBE CREATIVE CLOUD", "count": 1, "net": "USD -59.99"}, {"group": "OFFICE DEPOT 1183", "count": 1, "net": "USD -37.48"}, {"group": "GOOGLE WORKSPACE", "count": 1, "net": "USD -14.00"}, {"group": "BANK SERVICE FEE", "count": 1, "net": "USD -12.00"}]}}}

A ten-line October CSV was uploaded with bank_upload and imported with statement_import first. The server answers in JSON. This is a shortened copy, and each group is shown with three of its fields, unchanged.

You ask

How much did I spend at Shell in October?

Tool call

transactions_search {"query":"shell","from":"2026-10-01","to":"2026-10-31"}

Server answer

{"query": "shell", "matches": 2, "transactions": [{"date": "2026-10-08", "amount": "USD -48.30", "description": "SHELL OIL 5544"}, {"date": "2026-10-19", "amount": "USD -51.75", "description": "SHELL OIL 5544"}]}

Each match is shown with three of its fields. The server answers in JSON. This is a shortened copy, and every field shown is unchanged.

Questions

Can Claude read bank statements?
Yes. Claude reads a bank statement you upload as a PDF or CSV and answers questions about it, and with code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max) it can total and chart the rows in its sandbox. Projects can keep the files. What a chat does not keep is one ledger that grows month by month with repeated rows skipped. Connect the Bank Statement server (free token) and Claude imports each CSV export into a saved ledger per account, totals money in and out by category, month or counterparty, and searches every stored line.
Can it read a PDF statement?
No. The server imports delimited text such as a CSV export. A PDF sent by link is refused, and one sent as bytes fails at import. Claude can still read the PDF itself in the chat.
What is free, and what does Pro add?
Two accounts, import, search and summaries are free, and the free tier reads back the last 12 months. Pro is $19 once for the Bank Statement server, or $39 once for all 49 servers. It adds unlimited accounts, the full history, unlimited category rules and the statement export.
Where is my data kept?
On the hosted server your records are kept for your token for 30 days, refreshed on every write. Install the server locally if you want nothing to leave your machine.
Is the server free?
The hosted Bank Statement server has a free tier. A free token lasts 30 days and allows 600 calls an hour, with no account. Some features are Pro, and the server page lists what is free and what is not.
