Can Claude remove metadata from photos?

Yes in the Claude apps with code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max). Claude can re-save an uploaded photo without its metadata in the sandbox, and Claude Code can run exiftool if you have it. A phone photo can carry the camera, the time and the GPS position where it was taken. Connect the Image server (free token) and Claude writes a copy that carries the pixels and nothing else, then shows you the clean file's details.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Explains what EXIF and GPS data are.
  • Tells you which apps strip metadata when you share.

With the Image server

  • A clean copy with no camera, date or GPS block.
  • A check of the new file before you post it.
  • The original left unchanged.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-05. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

Strip all metadata from front.jpg before I post it.

Tool call

image_strip_metadata {"path":"front","out_path":"front-clean"}

Server answer

Re-encoded from raw pixels; no metadata was carried across. -> <download link> (valid 1 hour), 15.5 KB -> 26.2 KB, 1200x800, JPEG The source carried an EXIF or XMP block (camera, capture time and any GPS coordinates live there); the copy does not. This is a re-encode, not a byte-level edit: the pixels go through the encoder again, so a JPEG copy is not bit-identical to the original even though it looks the same. Keep the original if that matters. The source front.jpg is unchanged.

The test photo carried a camera name, a capture time and GPS coordinates. It was uploaded with image_upload first. Download links last one hour, so they are shown here as <download link>.

You ask

Show me the details of the clean copy.

Tool call

image_info {"path":"front-clean"}

Server answer

Questions

Can Claude remove metadata from photos?
Yes in the Claude apps with code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max). Claude can re-save an uploaded photo without its metadata in the sandbox, and Claude Code can run exiftool if you have it. A phone photo can carry the camera, the time and the GPS position where it was taken. Connect the Image server (free token) and Claude writes a copy that carries the pixels and nothing else, then shows you the clean file's details.
Why did the clean file get bigger?
The copy is re-encoded from the pixels, and the encoder settings differ from the camera. The server says so and keeps the original.
Does the photo leave my computer?
On the hosted server, yes, it is uploaded under your token. Install the Image server locally to strip metadata on your own machine.
Is the server free?
The hosted Image server has a free tier. A free token lasts 30 days and allows 600 calls an hour, with no account. Some features are Pro, and the server page lists what is free and what is not.
