Can Claude convert cups to grams?

Partly. A cup measures volume and a gram measures weight, so the answer depends on the ingredient, and Claude gives a typical figure from memory that may not match the chart your recipe was written with. It also has to guess which cup you mean, since US, metric and UK cups differ. Connect the free Cups to Grams server and Claude reads the weight of each ingredient from a named chart, such as King Arthur Baking or USDA FoodData Central, and says which cup it used.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Knows that flour, sugar and butter weigh different amounts per cup.
  • Converts mL, tablespoons and teaspoons, which are fixed volumes.
  • Scales a recipe up or down once it has the weights.

With the Cups to Grams server

  • A gram weight per cup for each ingredient, with the chart it came from.
  • US, metric and imperial cups kept apart.
  • Whole recipes scaled to metric weights, and oven temperatures with a fan setting.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-03. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

How many grams is 1 cup of all-purpose flour?

Tool call

convert_ingredient {"amount":1,"from_unit":"cup","to_unit":"g","ingredient":"all-purpose flour"}

Server answer

1 us_cup of All-purpose flour = 120 g. Density 120 g per US cup from King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart (1 cup = 120 g). Cup definition used: US cup (236.5882365 mL). Dry values assume spoon-and-level filling; scooping packs more in.

You ask

And 1 cup of brown sugar?

Tool call

convert_ingredient {"amount":1,"from_unit":"cup","to_unit":"g","ingredient":"brown sugar"}

Server answer

1 us_cup of Brown sugar (packed) = 220 g. Density 220 g per US cup from USDA FoodData Central FDC 168833 (1 cup packed = 220 g). Cup definition used: US cup (236.5882365 mL). Dry values assume spoon-and-level filling; scooping packs more in.

Questions

Can Claude convert cups to grams?
Partly. A cup measures volume and a gram measures weight, so the answer depends on the ingredient, and Claude gives a typical figure from memory that may not match the chart your recipe was written with. Why is a cup of brown sugar heavier than a cup of flour?
Brown sugar is packed into the cup and is denser. In the run above the server gave 220 g for packed brown sugar and 120 g for spooned and leveled flour.
Does it handle UK and Australian recipes?
Yes. Set the cup system to metric (250 mL) or imperial (284.13 mL), or name the unit, such as metric_cup.
Is the server free?
Yes. The Cups to Grams server is free at its hosted URL with no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
