Can Claude calculate depreciation?

Yes. Claude can explain straight-line and declining-balance depreciation and work out a schedule, and with code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max) it can build one in a spreadsheet. The risk is in the inputs, such as the wrong class life or convention, and a register that lives in one file. Connect the Asset Register server (free token) and Claude adds each fixed asset with its rate and life from a bundled table, IRS MACRS, HMRC pools or the Polish annex, builds the schedule per year or month, and values the register at any date.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Explains depreciation methods and works out a schedule.
  • Builds a schedule in a spreadsheet when code execution is on.

With the Asset Register server

  • Rate, life and convention from a bundled tax table.
  • A register of fixed assets kept between chats.
  • Net book value of the register at any date.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-05. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

Show the depreciation schedule for the MacBook Pro I bought in March.

Tool call

asset_schedule {"asset":"MacBook Pro 16"}

Server answer

{"asset": {"id": "ASSET-2026-0001", "name": "MacBook Pro 16", "cost": "USD 3,499.00", "in_service_date": "2026-03-10"}, "convention": "us-half-year", "periods": [{"year": 2026, "amount": "USD 699.80", "basis": "IRS Pub 946 Table A-1, 5-year half-year, year 1: 20 percent of cost"}, {"year": 2027, "amount": "USD 1,119.68", "basis": "IRS Pub 946 Table A-1, 5-year half-year, year 2: 32 percent of cost"}, {"year": 2028, "amount": "USD 671.81", "basis": "IRS Pub 946 Table A-1, 5-year half-year, year 3: 19.2 percent of cost"}, {"year": 2029, "amount": "USD 403.08", "basis": "IRS Pub 946 Table A-1, 5-year half-year, year 4: 11.52 percent of cost"}, {"year": 2030, "amount": "USD 403.09", "basis": "IRS Pub 946 Table A-1, 5-year half-year, year 5: 11.52 percent of cost"}, {"year": 2031, "amount": "USD 201.54", "basis": "IRS Pub 946 Table A-1, 5-year half-year, year 6: 5.76 percent of cost"}]}

The laptop was added with asset_add first as 5-year property for USD 3,499.00. The server answers in JSON. This is a shortened copy, and every field shown is unchanged. The six years add up to the full cost.

You ask

What would USD 12,000 of 7-year equipment bought in June 2026 depreciate by each year?

Tool call

asset_schedule {"scheme":"us","category":"7-year","cost_minor":1200000,"currency":"USD","purchase_date":"2026-06-01"}

Server answer

{"category": {"code": "7-year", "name": "7-year property"}, "convention": "us-half-year", "periods": [{"year": 2026, "amount": "USD 1,714.80"}, {"year": 2027, "amount": "USD 2,938.80"}, {"year": 2028, "amount": "USD 2,098.80"}, {"year": 2029, "amount": "USD 1,498.80"}, {"year": 2030, "amount": "USD 1,071.60"}, {"year": 2031, "amount": "USD 1,070.40"}, {"year": 2032, "amount": "USD 1,071.60"}, {"year": 2033, "amount": "USD 535.20"}]}

This asset is not in the register. asset_schedule prices it without saving it. The server answers in JSON. This is a shortened copy, and every field shown is unchanged.

Questions

Can Claude calculate depreciation?
Yes. Claude can explain straight-line and declining-balance depreciation and work out a schedule, and with code execution on (the default on Free, Pro and Max) it can build one in a spreadsheet. The risk is in the inputs, such as the wrong class life or convention, and a register that lives in one file. Does it apply bonus depreciation or section 179?
No. The US table is the GDS schedule under the half-year convention from IRS Publication 946 Table A-1. Ask your accountant whether bonus depreciation, section 179 or the mid-quarter convention applies to you.
What is free, and what does Pro add?
Ten assets, schedules, the register listing and disposals are free. Pro is $19 once for the Asset Register server, or $39 once for all 49 servers. It adds unlimited assets, the monthly depreciation journal and the yearly asset report.
Is the server free?
The hosted Asset Register server has a free tier. A free token lasts 30 days and allows 600 calls an hour, with no account. Some features are Pro, and the server page lists what is free and what is not.
