Can Claude convert raw to cooked weight?

Only roughly. Claude knows that meat loses water and fat as it cooks and often quotes a rule of thumb such as 25%, but the real loss depends on the cut, the fat level and the cooking method, and USDA measured it for each one. Connect the free Raw to Cooked Weight server and Claude uses the USDA cooking yield for that cut and method, with the range seen across USDA samples, in both directions.

What Claude does alone, and what needs the server

Claude on its own

  • Explains why meat shrinks when it cooks.
  • Applies a percentage you give it.

With the Raw to Cooked Weight server

  • The USDA measured yield for each cut and cooking method, with its range.
  • Cooked weight from raw, and raw weight from a cooked portion for food logging.
  • How much raw meat to buy for a number of cooked servings.

A real call to the live server

We sent this to the hosted server on 2026-11-03. The answer below is the server's own text, not a mock-up. Live values will differ when you ask.

You ask

How much does 1 lb of raw 80/20 ground beef weigh after I pan-broil it into patties?

Tool call

convert_raw_to_cooked {"food":"80/20 ground beef patty","method":"pan_broil","raw_weight":1,"unit":"lb"}

Server answer

1 pound raw beef, ground, medium fat (12%-22%), patty (pan-broiled) cooks down to about 0.73 pounds (331 g) at the USDA cooking yield of 73%; USDA samples ranged 0.71-0.76 pounds.

You ask

I ate 150 g of roasted chicken thigh. What did it weigh raw?

Tool call

convert_cooked_to_raw {"food":"chicken thigh","method":"roast","cooked_weight":150,"unit":"g"}

Server answer

150 grams of cooked chicken, broiler-fryer, thigh, meat and skin (baked or roasted, unspecified) came from about 217.39 grams (217 g) raw, using the USDA cooking yield of 69%. Use the raw weight with raw nutrition data when you log food or scale a recipe.

Questions

Can Claude convert raw to cooked weight?
Only roughly. Claude knows that meat loses water and fat as it cooks and often quotes a rule of thumb such as 25%, but the real loss depends on the cut, the fat level and the cooking method, and USDA measured it for each one. Connect the free Raw to Cooked Weight server and Claude uses the USDA cooking yield for that cut and method, with the range seen across USDA samples, in both directions.
Why log raw weight?
Nutrition labels and most food databases list raw meat. Logging a cooked portion against raw values undercounts, so the server converts the cooked portion back to raw.
Does it cover fish or rice?
No. The USDA table covers meat and poultry only, so the server refuses fish, seafood, duck, rice and pasta and says why.
Is the server free?
Yes. The Raw to Cooked Weight server is free at its hosted URL with no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
