What it knows that a model doesn't

A model answers from training data. This server reads the source when you ask.

  • This week's average price per gallon with the change from last week, four weeks ago and a year ago, read from the EIA weekly retail price survey.
  • Which places EIA prices itself. That is the US, five regions, nine states and ten cities, and any other state gets its region with a plain note saying so.
  • The cost of a fill-up at the area average or your own price, and the fuel cost of a trip from miles and miles per gallon.

Sources EIA weekly retail gasoline and diesel price tables (eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/) and the EIA weekly history pages, read at call time. EIA publishes new averages on Mondays.

estimate_fill_up_cost Estimate fill-up and trip cost. Cost of filling a tank (gallons times this week's EIA average for the area, or your price per gallon), and optionally the fuel cost of a trip from miles and miles per gallon, including cents per mile.

Is the gas prices today MCP server free?
Yes. The hosted URL is free and needs no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
Why not just ask the model?
A model answers from its training data. That data stops at a cutoff date, and long sums can drift. This server reads its data or rules each time you ask, so the answer is current and exact.
Where does the data come from?
EIA weekly retail gasoline and diesel price tables (eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/) and the EIA weekly history pages, read at call time. EIA publishes new averages on Mondays.
Which apps can use it?
Any MCP client that accepts a remote server URL: Claude.ai and Claude Desktop custom connectors, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and others. You can also run it locally with npx.
