What it knows that a model doesn't

A model answers from training data. This server reads the source when you ask.

  • Whether FDA lists a drug as in shortage now, with status, availability, reason and the date FDA last updated it.
  • Package level listings by NDC, company and presentation.
  • Recent listings and counts by therapeutic category or reason. It reports FDA data only and gives no medical advice.

Sources FDA Drug Shortages database through the openFDA drug shortages API (api.fda.gov/drug/shortages.json), updated daily.

search_drug_shortages Search drug shortages. Is a drug in shortage now? Searches the FDA Drug Shortages database (via openFDA, updated daily) by generic name, brand name or active ingredient, for example "amoxicillin", "Adderall", "semaglutide", "lidocaine".
get_drug_shortage_by_ndc Get drug shortage by NDC. FDA shortage status for one National Drug Code, either a package NDC (0641-6059-01) or a product NDC (0641-6059), in the dashed form printed on the label.
list_recent_drug_shortages List recent drug shortages. The FDA drug shortage list, most recently updated listings first. Defaults to status Current. Filter by therapeutic category, for example Anesthesia, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatry, Cardiovascular, Infectious Disease.
count_drug_shortages Count drug shortages. How many FDA drug shortage listings there are now, grouped by status, therapeutic_category, shortage_reason or drug (distinct products). Defaults to Current listings by therapeutic category.

Is the drug shortage list MCP server free?
Yes. The hosted URL is free and needs no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
Why not just ask the model?
A model answers from its training data. That data stops at a cutoff date, and long sums can drift. This server reads its data or rules each time you ask, so the answer is current and exact.
