Lake level MCP server

Live US lake and reservoir levels, read from the government gauge at call time.

Free. No key, no sign-in, no paid tier. 4 tools.

Connector URL

https://lake-level-mcp.lipmichal.workers.dev/mcp

Paste it as a custom connector in Claude, or add it to Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code. Setup for each is below.

What it knows that a model does not

A model answers from training data. This server reads the source when you ask.

  • The water level of 44 US lakes and reservoirs in 12 states, read now. A model only knows old levels.
  • The change over 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days, and the distance below full pool.
  • A daily history for up to 365 days, from the same gauge.

Sources USGS, USACE CWMS, CDEC, Reclamation RISE and TWDB gauges. No key.

Tools (4)

Read from the live server with tools/list on 2026-11-02.

ToolWhat it does
search_lakes Search US lakes and reservoirs. List the 44 US lakes and reservoirs this server reads live (Lake Mead, Lake Powell, Lake Travis, Shasta, Oroville, Lanier, Texoma, Kentucky Lake and more) by name, river, operator or state.
get_lake_level Get current lake level. Current water surface elevation (ft above sea level) of a US lake or reservoir, read now from its government gauge (USGS, USACE CWMS, CDEC, Reclamation or TWDB).
get_lake_history Get lake level history. Daily (or weekly) water elevation series for a US lake or reservoir over the last 2 to 365 days, from the same government gauge as get_lake_level, one reading per day.
compare_lakes Compare lake levels. Current levels of 2 to 10 US lakes side by side, read live from their gauges: elevation, feet below full pool, percent full, seasonal target and 24 h / 7 day / 30 day change, ranked by distance below full pool.

Claude Code

Run this in your terminal. Then run claude mcp list to check it.

claude mcp add --transport http lake-level https://lake-level-mcp.lipmichal.workers.dev/mcp

Cursor

Merge this into ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json (one project).

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "lake-level": {
      "url": "https://lake-level-mcp.lipmichal.workers.dev/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Put this in .vscode/mcp.json. The top key is servers, not mcpServers.

{
  "servers": {
    "lake-level": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://lake-level-mcp.lipmichal.workers.dev/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Prefer to run it on your machine? It is on npm: npx -y lake-level-mcp (needs Node.js).

Questions

Is the lake level MCP server free?
Yes. The hosted URL is free and needs no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
Why not just ask the model?
A model answers from its training data. That data stops at a cutoff date, and long sums can drift. This server reads its data or rules each time you ask, so the answer is current and exact.
Where does the data come from?
USGS, USACE CWMS, CDEC, Reclamation RISE and TWDB gauges. No key.
Which apps can use it?
Any MCP client that accepts a remote server URL: Claude.ai and Claude Desktop custom connectors, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and others. You can also run it locally with npx.
