Can Claude check river levels?

Connector URL

https://river-level-mcp.lipmichal.workers.dev/mcp

Paste it as a custom connector in Claude, or add it to Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code. Setup for each is below.

What it knows that a model doesn't

A model answers from training data. This server reads the source when you ask.

  • The current river stage and discharge at any active USGS stream gauge, read at call time.
  • How far the river is from the National Weather Service flood stage, and the forecast crest.
  • Up to a year of daily history for stage, flow or water temperature.

Sources USGS Water Data OGC API (latest continuous and daily values) and the NOAA National Water Prediction Service. No key.

Tools (4)

Read from the live server with tools/list on 2026-11-03.

ToolWhat it does
find_river_gauges Find river gauges. Search USGS stream gauges nationwide by river and place name (for example "mississippi st louis", "potomac little falls"), by state, or within a radius of a latitude and longitude.
get_river_level Get current river level. Current river stage (gage height in feet), streamflow (discharge in cubic feet per second) and water temperature where measured, read now from a USGS stream gauge (readings every 5 to 60 minutes).
get_river_history Get river level history. Daily mean streamflow (default) or stage for a USGS gauge over the last 2 to 366 days, with first, last, low, high, mean and change. Use it for trend, drought and "is the river rising" questions.
get_flood_forecast Get river flood forecast. The current NOAA National Water Prediction Service river forecast for a gauge: the forecast stage and flow series, the forecast crest with its flood category, the latest observation, flood stages and the record crest.

Claude Code

Run this in your terminal. Then run claude mcp list to check it.

claude mcp add --transport http river-level https://river-level-mcp.lipmichal.workers.dev/mcp

Cursor

Merge this into ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json (one project).

  }
}

VS Code

Put this in .vscode/mcp.json. The top key is servers, not mcpServers.

Questions

Is the river level MCP server free?
Yes. The hosted URL is free and needs no token, key or account. The source is open on GitHub.
Why not just ask the model?
A model answers from its training data. That data stops at a cutoff date, and long sums can drift. This server reads its data or rules each time you ask, so the answer is current and exact.
Where does the data come from?
USGS Water Data OGC API (latest continuous and daily values) and the NOAA National Water Prediction Service. No key.
Which apps can use it?
Any MCP client that accepts a remote server URL: Claude.ai and Claude Desktop custom connectors, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and others. You can also run it locally with npx.
