Track billable time in chat

If you bill by the hour, lost minutes are lost income. Freelancers and consultants can start and stop a timer in the same chat where they work, then get invoice lines at the end of the week.

Claude has no clock, so it can't track time on its own. With the Time Tracker server, you say 'start a timer on project X' and 'stop', and Claude logs entries, totals billable hours per project and turns them into invoice lines. A CSV export is included.

What you get

Without a tool, and with the tool

Without a tool

Claude can't run a clock. It has no memory of when you started, and it can't keep a timesheet between chats. It can only add up hours you type in yourself.

With Time Tracker

Time Tracker runs one stopwatch, logs entries with project, task and rate, and reports hours and money per period. It turns billable time into invoice lines, marks hours as billed so they aren't billed twice, and exports the timesheet to CSV.

Example · Freelance translator

Track billable time in chat

You

I forgot to log yesterday: 2.5 hours on the Kowalski contract translation, billable, 160 PLN an hour. Then show this week's billable hours per project.

  1. project_set_rate Sets 160 PLN an hour for the Kowalski project
  2. entry_add Logs 2.5 hours for yesterday and returns the amount
  3. report Totals this week's billable hours and money per project
Result

A logged entry worth 400 PLN and a weekly table of billable hours and amounts per project.

Example · Clara Weiss, freelance UX researcher in Vienna, Austria

Log a day without a timer app

You

Start a timer on Bergbahn app, task interviews, 95 euros an hour. ... Stop it. Also log 1.5 hours yesterday on Bergbahn for the report write-up.

  1. timer_start Starts the stopwatch on Bergbahn at EUR 95/h
  2. timer_stop Logs 2 h 40 min as one entry: EUR 253.33
  3. entry_add Adds the 90-minute entry from yesterday: EUR 142.50
Result

Two entries on Bergbahn totalling 4 h 10 min and EUR 395.83, each with the rate frozen on the entry.

Turn the week into invoice lines

You

Give me invoice lines for Northside Dental for this week, then mark them billed as invoice 2026-031.

  1. invoice_summary Builds one line per task and rate: 9.5 h build at GBP 60, 2 h support at GBP 45
  2. entry_mark_billed Stamps those entries with invoice 2026-031
Result

Lines totalling GBP 660.00, ready to paste into the invoice. Those hours no longer appear in the next summary.

Common mistakes with this job

  • Logging time from memory at the end of the week and losing 10-20% of it.
  • Billing the same hours twice because nothing marks them as invoiced.
  • One rate for every client when the contracts say otherwise.

Questions

Can I do this in Claude?
Claude has no clock, so it can't track time on its own. With the Time Tracker server, you say 'start a timer on project X' and 'stop', and Claude logs entries, totals billable hours per project and turns them into invoice lines. A CSV export is included.
Where are my hours stored?
On the local install, in the server's data folder on your machine. On the hosted URL, on the server under your token for 30 days, refreshed on every write. No account either way.
Can I use different currencies per client?
Yes. Each project has its own rate and currency, for example EUR, USD, GBP or PLN. Totals are given per currency.
What stops me on the free tier?
Reports and invoice lines read the last 7 days only, you can store 100 entries, and 2 projects can have rates. A freelancer who bills monthly will hit the 7-day window.
