Categorize a bank statement with AI

A month of bank lines needs categories before the accountant asks. Claude sorts a pasted statement once. Store the lines with your category rules, and next month's lines sort themselves.

Claude can suggest categories for a pasted statement, but it saves nothing. With the Bank Statement server, Claude imports the CSV, applies saved rules to every line, finds recurring charges and exports a categorized file for your accountant. Next month the same rules run again.

Without a tool, and with the tool

Without a tool

Paste a CSV into Claude and it will suggest a category for each line in that chat. Long statements can hit the context limit, the categories aren't saved, and next month you start again with no rules and no history to compare.

With Bank Statement

Bank Statement imports the bank CSV into a stored ledger, applies your category rules to every line, and lets you set one-off categories by id. It finds recurring charges, summarizes spend by category and month, and exports a CSV or JSON file for your accountant.

Categorize a bank statement with AI

You

Import my Revolut Business CSV for Q3. Put anything with 'Makro' under stock, 'Uber Eats' under platform fees, then give me spend per category per month and export it for my accountant.

  1. statement_import Reads the CSV and detects the columns
  2. category_rules Stores the two match rules and applies them
  3. statement_summary Totals spend per category per month
  4. statement_export Writes the categorized lines to a CSV file
Result

Q3 spend grouped by category and month, plus a categorized CSV file the accountant can import.

Example · Freelance developer in Gdansk with an mBank account

  2. recurring_detect Groups charges that repeat each month
Result

A list of recurring charges with amount and cadence, for example 3 software plans at PLN 49, PLN 89 and PLN 120 a month.

Common mistakes with this job

  • Categorizing by hand every month instead of writing rules once.
  • Mixing personal and business accounts in one import, so totals are wrong.
  • Exporting before checking the uncategorized lines, which then end up as 'other'.
