Can Claude read zip files?

Not in most chat apps. And you should check what's inside before you open it. Here's how to list, read and safely unpack a zip from chat.

Claude.ai with code execution can sometimes unpack an uploaded zip in its sandbox. Claude Desktop, Cursor and VS Code can't open a .zip without a tool.

Can Claude read zip files?
Most chat apps can't open a zip. Claude.ai with code execution sometimes can. The Zip server lets Claude list entries, read one text file without unpacking, unpack safely with traversal and symlink entries refused, and create new archives with glob patterns. Check the list before you unpack.
Is checking a zip someone sent me limited on the free tier?
No. Listing, unpacking and reading entries are never metered. The free limits apply only to zips you create.
Does it upload my files?
Not on the local install. It makes no network call of any kind, and everything happens on your machine. The hosted URL takes the zip in the request and keeps it on the server for a limited time.
Can it open password-protected zips?
No. Encrypted entries are flagged and refused.
